A breathtaking winter wonderland view
JYUHYO "FROST- COVERED TREES", a beautiful work of nature is a must see sight in Zao. Also known as "Ice monsters", they are created by the unique climate and trees of Zao Mountains. Many tourists visit Zao every year to enjoy this magnificent panoramic view. You cannot miss the magical view at night as well where the area is lit with bright lights. Various activities are available such as, trekking, snow boarding, and winter fireworks. A world you've never experienced awaits you in Zao!

Negative 2℃ at the top (11/10)

Look at how they are formed! The one-way breeze of wind brings the snowflakes as they are frosted on to branches and leaves of the trees. It snows so much in the winter that the Jizo at the top of the mountain gets covered in snow.

Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Cable Car, Fireworks!

I’m heading to the top of the mountain by the cable car. The boarding gate is big so people with luggage won’t have a problem boarding either. I’m excited to see the view but I wonder how the weather is?

When it comes to Yamagata food, you cannot leave out Imoni. The well cooked potato and beef is a great match with rice. For dinner, we had “Tsuya-Hime”, Yamagata rice cooked by earthenware pot. Very soft with a slight sweet flavor was unlike any other rice we’ve had before. Famous for its rice and fruits, Yamagata has a wide variety of Japanese sake and wine. For souvenirs we recommend the unique “Sakuranbo Curry” (Cherry curry) or “Imoni Curry”. If you want to experience some local Japanese Yamagata food, this is where you want to be.

Jingisu Khan is said to have been founded first at Zao Onsen.

The thick and tasty lamb is cooked on the round teppan. For appetizers, vinegar based flowers, assortments of vegetables with meat flavored miso, and many other original Yamagata dishes are available.
