Look at how they are formed! The one-way breeze of wind brings the snowflakes as they are frosted on to branches and leaves of the trees. It snows so much in the winter that the Jizo at the top of the mountain gets covered in snow.
I’m heading to the top of the mountain by the cable car. The boarding gate is big so people with luggage won’t have a problem boarding either. I’m excited to see the view but I wonder how the weather is?

- Zao Onsen Ski Resort
- One of the most famous ski resorts in the Tohoku area. This spacious resort consists of 26 courses, 42 cable cars, and attracts ski lovers from all over the country. The various types of courses allow everyone from beginners to professionals to enjoy their time here. A hot spring is also located in the ski lodge, letting you experience a great combination of skiing and onsen!
- Zao Cable Car
- You can experience the gorgeous sight from the cable car as the view changes through out the year. Skiers and tourists use the car, connecting three stations: Zao Sanroku station, Juhyo Kougen Station, Zao Jizosancho Station. The car is wide and quiet as it provides a relaxing comfortable ride. You can also enjoy a meal with a great view of the ice monsters at the restaurant “Sancho” located inside Zao Jizosancho Station.
- Zao Frosted Trees Festival 2012
- Planned in February to celebrate the ice monster season. Various events will be held such as the winter fireworks, ski/snowboard shows, games to win cable car tickets, and snow covered hot springs! Held through 2012/2/3 to 2/9.※Each event schedule, please check.

Visiting onsen with "Kokeshi" (Traditional wooden dolls)
You can visit three onsens of the ryokan (1,260 yen). As a souvenir, you can also paint your kokeshi if you buy one (extra 200 yen). Make your very own original kokeshi!

Jingisu Khan is said to have been founded first at Zao Onsen.
The thick and tasty lamb is cooked on the round teppan. For appetizers, vinegar based flowers, assortments of vegetables with meat flavored miso, and many other original Yamagata dishes are available.
