Aomori Prefecture is a vehicle-oriented society, as public transportation infrastructure is not yet well developed. As for railway, Aomori Station has just three train lines. Renting a car is by far the best option for getting around freely. Free parking is available at most sightseeing destinations. If you're traveling around Hokkaido as well, ferry ships will carry your car.
Aomori Airport is Honshu's northernmost international airport, located about a 30-minute drive from Aomori and Shin-Aomori stations. If you are heading to Hachinohe or other eastern areas of the prefecture, Misawa Airport is a convenient choice. Whether you arrive via Aomori Airport or Misawa Airport, rental car agencies are available at both.
The best way to enjoy Aomori's vastness is by car. Take in the splendor of many natural attractions that change with each season. Within a 40- or 50-minute drive south of Shin-Aomori Station, the Towada-Hakkoda area offers an abundance of unforgettable experiences. You'll find popular attractions such as the Mount Hakkoda Ropeway, Lake Towada, the Oirase mountain stream, and Sukayu Onsen.
The summer festivals in Aomori are among Japan's most magnificent festivals. The Aomori Nebuta Festival, Hirosaki Neputa Festival , and Goshogawara Tachi-Neputa Festival take place in August. Concurrently, the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival, steeped in a history of more than 300 years, takes place in the months of July and August. Due to heavy traffic and limited parking during such events, be sure to plan your travel and parking arrangements in advance.
Aomori experiences heavy snowfall throughout the winter months, so studless winter tires are required for safe driving from around October or November to March.
