Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan. Spanning an area of around 32,200 square miles, it is the country’s second-largest island. The enormity of the land means that intercity travel can be quite a trip. Naturally, renting a car is the best way to get around.

New Chitose Airport is the usual gateway to Hokkaido. With an average of 15 million travelers per year, it is the second busiest airport in Japan (as of August 2022). The car rental counters are located on the first floor of both the domestic and international terminals.

Drive with caution during snowy winter months (November through April). The roads can become icy in mountainous areas, at nights, or in early mornings.
