Sapporo City is one of the most popular destinations in Japan. The city center is highly urbanized and developed, with excellent public transportation networks of subways, buses, and streetcars. However, with so many attractions located in the suburbs, renting a car is the optimal way to visit the more famous spots.
- About the airport

The airport of choice is New Chitose Airport. Downtown Sapporo is nearly 28 miles away via Route 36, which should take you about an hour and 20 minutes. The car rental counte r is located on the first floor of the terminal, making it very convenient.
- Sightseeing and activities

Otaru City, a popular sightseeing destination, is a place you can easily visit on a day trip from Sapporo. It is roughly an hour and 10 minutes away via Route 5. Discover the unique atmosphere of a port town that is quite distinct from Sapporo.
The Shakotan area is another interesting place to visit, and it is about an hour and 20 minutes away by expressway. The Shakotan Peninsula, known for its “Shakotan Blue” hues, offers a breathtaking view to enjoy.
The Jozankei area, located in the outer reaches of Sapporo, is another popular destination. It is one of the most prominent hot spring spots in Hokkaido, about a 50-minute journey away via Route 230. The main baths and footbaths can be used without the need for an overnight stay, attracting many travelers throughout the year.

Sapporo has many events throughout the four seasons. The Sapporo Snow Festival, which takes place in early February, is one of the most popular events among visitors. The festival is an annually celebrated winter tradition, attracting more than two million visitors. During the eight-day event, the city becomes a gallery showcasing many huge snow and ice sculptures and various other art pieces.
There is heavy snow in winter. If you are planning to visit between November and April, you should find out in advance which car rental agencies have studless winter tires as standard equipment.
