Helpful information about Kagoshima

Transit and transportation
While trains and buses serve Kagoshima City well, venturing outside the central area is best done by renting a car to freely explore. Ferries that can take cars to the outlying islands operate daily as well. Another advantage is the large number of free parking spaces.
About the airport
Since Kagoshima Airport does not have a train station within walking distance, buses and cars are the main ways to get to the central area of the city. Car rental agencies at Kagoshima Airport conveniently provide their own shuttle bus service. Airports are also located on the islands of Tokunoshima, Tanegashima, Okinoerabujima, Yoronjima, Amami Oshima, Yakushima, and Kikaijima.
Sightseeing and activities
Kagoshima Prefecture is a vast region with many amazing sights and spiritually rich places that can only be experienced by car. It is also the hot spring capital of Japan. For stays of more than three days, you can plan to drop off your car at a different location. If you only have one or two days, it’s better to stick to a specific area for sightseeing. The airport is about 40 minutes away from Kagoshima’s Chuo area, which is located in the middle of the prefecture. Just a 15-minute ferry ride away from mainland lies Sakurajima, a captivating island dubbed the “symbol of Kagoshima”. Other places of interest include an observatory, a traditional Japanese garden, and an aquarium. The Kirishima area is a mountainous region that extends from the airport to the north. It is known as the location of Kirishima Onsen Village and Kirishima Jingu Shrine, a national treasure. The airport is about 40 minutes away and the city center is about 75 minutes away. If you love the sea, you should visit the Nansatsu area which includes the Satsuma Peninsula to the south. Just 70 minutes from the heart of the city, Ibusuki Onsen features an open-air bath that offers a stunning view of Mount Kaimon — aptly nicknamed the “Mount Fuji of Satsuma” — and the sea. Along with Kirishima, Ibusuki Onsen is a popular hot spring destination with breathtaking views. Consider embarking on a journey to discover remote islands like Yakushima, Amami Oshima, or Tokunoshima, designated World Natural Heritage sites. Car rentals are available on these islands; alternatively, take your car on the ferry for your exploration.
