Yakushima Island is inaccessible by land with no connecting bridges or tunnels. To get to the island, visitors must travel by air or sea. Seven high-speed boats and one ferry connect Kagoshima Port to Miyanoura and Anbo ports on Yakushima daily.
Limited public transportation options and very few bus routes make renting a car the ideal choice for exploring the island.

Direct flights to Yakushima Airport are available from Kagoshima, Osaka, and Fukuoka. Five daily flights connect Kagoshima Airport to Yakushima in a swift 30-minute journey. Direct flights from Osaka Itami Airport and Fukuoka Airport offer convenient travel options to Yakushima, with flight times of 90 minutes and 65 minutes, respectively.
However, each location offers only one daily flight. Several car rental agencies are conveniently situated at the airport, offering a wide range of vehicles to choose from, so let your Yakushima exploration begin immediately upon arrival. Note, however, that there are no ATMs or currency exchange services at the airport.

Yakushima, Japan's first World Natural Heritage site, is about 90% mountainous. There are many spiritually infused locations; there are also well-maintained trekking courses and walking trails through the ancient Yakusugi cedar forest. A scenic drive, taking about three hours, will give you a full circle of Yakushima, making it possible to experience its breathtaking beauty in a single day.
Must-visit sightseeing spots include the Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine (40-minute drive from the airport) and Yakusugi Land (30-minute drive from Anbo Port). The moss forests here provide a stunning journey, and they’re said to have inspired the Studio Ghibli production, Princess Mononoke. Behold the majestic Jomon cedars, considered the oldest living trees on earth, and explore Wilson's Stump, a remnant of an ancient Yakusugi cedar tree that offers a glimpse into the island's past.
Visit the Ohko Falls, one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls, located halfway around the island south of the airport. Head back north for a 45-minute drive to Nagata Inaka Beach, a vital nesting site for endangered loggerhead turtles.
Beyond the main activities, Yakushima offers exceptional water sports opportunities, including snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and canoeing. Ferry service connects travelers to Kuchinoerabu and Tanegashima islands.
