The Naha city center is a 10-minute drive from Naha Airport, the gateway to the main island of Okinawa. While public transit options like buses and monorails are available for navigating Naha City, renting a car provides the most convenient means to reach various tourist destinations. As a matter of fact, rental cars are a popular choice among international visitors to Okinawa.
There are two expressways in Naha: the Okinawa Expressway connects southern Okinawa to the starting point for sightseeing in the north, while the Naha Airport Expressway connects the Okinawa Expressway to the airport area.
Many sightseeing destinations are conveniently situated along the Okinawa Expressway. However, Kokusai-dori Street and other roads in downtown Naha are narrow and known to get congested. It is best to park your rental car at one of the many coin-operated parking lots around Kokusai-dori and take a walk around the area.

Kokusai-dori Street in the heart of Naha City boasts a one-mile stretch filled with restaurants, souvenir shops, and hotels. Shuri Castle, an historic monument of the Ryukyu Dynasty, is also about a 30-minute drive away from the airport. In addition to exploring significant cultural assets, feast your eyes on a panoramic view of Naha City and the Kerama Sea from the observatory.
Kaichu Road, a three-plus-mile stretch that connects four islands, is the most popular drive along the east coast. The picturesque journey to Ikei Beach from the city center takes about an hour and 20 minutes, offering a magnificent view of the emerald-green scenery. On the west coast, it’s about an 80-minute journey to reach Chatan via Route 58, where you will find American Village and Manzamo, a picturesque place with a spectacular view.
The west coast boasts a large number of beaches and a wide range of marine leisure activities.
Venturing further from the city center, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is roughly an hour and 30 minutes away via the expressway.

The three major festivals of Naha City — the Naha Hari, the Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival, and the Shurijo Castle Festival — are immensely popular. The Naha Hari is an event that features dragon boat racing.
During the Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival, Kokusai-dori swarms with people tugging on a 650-foot-long, 43-ton rope.
The Shurijo Castle Festival is a time-honored procession that brings to life the visitation rituals of the Ryukyu Dynasty. There will be glittering processions and time-honored dances.
