Guide to the Best Beaches in Okinawa

Okinawa is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, thanks to its white sand, turquoise water, and coral reefs that begin just steps from the shore. This subtropical island chain stretches hundreds of miles south of Japan’s mainland, closer to Taiwan than Tokyo, and offers an entirely different side of the country. Whether you’re after a quiet cove, a family-friendly swimming spot, or world-class snorkeling, we’ve compiled a list of the best beaches that Okinawa has to offer.

Stretching for over four miles across the southwest coast of Miyako Island, Yonaha Maehama is often called one of Japan’s most beautiful beaches – and for good reason. The water here is calm and shallow, the sand is soft and expansive, and the beach seems to glow under the island sun. A view of the bridge in the distance adds to the postcard-perfect setting, and there’s even plenty of space here during the peak season.

With a few buildings nearby and minimal development, the beach retains a quiet, underdeveloped charm that’s become so rare it's refreshing.
