A Guide to Eikan-do Temple in Kyoto

In the eastern hills of Kyoto, Eikan-do Temple, formally known as Zenrin-ji, stands as a sanctuary of tranquility. This temple, renowned for its stunning autumn colors and unique Buddhist statue, offers visitors a glimpse into Japan’s ancient spirituality and natural beauty.

The Eikan-do Temple legend

Eikan-do’s history dates back to 863 CE when the monk Shinsho founded it as a Shingon Buddhist temple. However, its transformation into the temple we see today began around 200 years later, with the arrival of Yokan, also known as Eikan, who the temple is named after.

In an era of samurai and imperial courts, Eikan stood out for his dedication to helping the poor and sick. He took the teachings of Buddha beyond the temple walls, actively serving those in need throughout Kyoto.

But Eikan-do is perhaps most famous for its unique Amida Buddha statue, which looks back across its shoulder rather than straight ahead. Legend has it that one day, as Eikan was deep in prayer, circling the statue, the Amida Buddha statue came to life and began leading Eikan in his walking meditation. Astonished, Eikan stood there, and the statue turned its head to look back at Eikan and said, “Yokan, you are slow.” before freezing in place. To this day, the statue remains in this unusual pose, with its gaze forever fixed over its shoulder.

Eikan’s charitable approach and this miraculous event resonated so profoundly that the temple soon became known by his name. Today, the Eikan-do Temple stands not just as a historical site but as a living testament to the power of compassion, faith, and the occasional miracle. Visitors aren’t just touring an ancient building; they’re stepping into a space where centuries of benevolence and a touch of the divine have left their mark.

In the distance, the Taho-to pagoda stands out, promising panoramic vistas of Kyoto from its top. You’ll also encounter other buildings, including the chief priest’s quarters with beautiful fusuma paintings.
