11 Great Glamping Facilities in Japan
Glamping has taken Japan by storm. It’s a popular way for people to enjoy the outdoors while having the luxuries of a hotel. Glamping is a portmanteau of “glamorous” and “camping”, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, this style of vacationing became very popular thanks to the spaciousness and access to outdoor activities it affords. Post-pandemic, there still seems to be a demand for glamping, so we introduce to you some of Japan’s top glamping spots.
1. Glamping Fuji-no-Kirameki Fuji Gotemba
For a gorgeous panoramic view of the Shizuoka side of Mount Fuji, look no further than Glamping Fuji-no-Kirameki Fuji Gotemba. There are various accommodations suitable for couples or families, including luxury and dog-friendly cabins.
On site, you can also experience or participate in several paid activities, such as the sauna tent, private baths, and yoga lessons. Those wanting to try some paid in-cabin activities can try their hand at making beeswax candles, ukuleles, or chopsticks. Sports equipment is available for rent, and there is also a kids' park.
We recommend having a BBQ dinner during your stay. You can choose to bring your own meat to grill or have it prepared in advance on site. If you stay for more than one night, you can venture off-grounds to the nearby museums or get some high-class shopping in at Gotemba Premium Outlets.
2. Vision Glamping Resort & Spa Yamanakako
If you want to see Mount Fuji from the Yamanashi side, we recommend staying at Vision Glamping Resort & Spa Yamanakako. The space is designed for those who want the comforts of a luxury hotel and glamping combined in a single stay.
Each accommodation is equipped with a glamping dome, a sauna tent, a private outdoor bath, and a cold bath so you can fully enjoy Mount Fuji and Lake Yamanaka. You can look at the stars from your glamping dome or gaze at Mount Fuji as you bathe in the open-air baths. For dinner, several dishes are available, and Vision Glamping tries to use as many products locally sourced from Yamanashi as possible.
3. Nozomi Glamping & Spa Saku x Karuizawa
Nagano is also home to plenty of beautiful mountains, and we recommend staying at Nozomi Glamping & Spa Saku x Karuizawa to enjoy them. Those staying can enjoy a great view of Mount Asama with everything they need nearby. As of July 2024, new villas are available for stay.
You can enjoy free drinks at the main management building of the grounds; for dinner, you can enjoy local Nagano delicacies like Tateshina beef. The management building also offers a hot spring bath to freely enjoy.
4. Glamprook
While three locations are part of the Glamprook business, Glamprook Iizuna Kogen provides the mountain's popular glamping vibe. There are plenty of activities to do throughout the year around the glamping grounds, such as skiing at the nearby Iizuna Resort, strawberry or blueberry picking (included in some stay packages), and soaking in the open-air bath.
For dinner, enjoy a meal curated by Akira Watanabe, named the “Evangelist of the Fields” as he actively uses locally sourced ingredients and works carefully with producers/farmers.
5. Foret de Repos (Gran Forest Echizen Miyama)
Although Fukui might not be the most well-known travel destination, you should check out Foret de Repos if you want to go glamping. There are traditional Japanese-style rooms at Gran Forest, but you’ll want to stay in one of the six glamping domes.
The domes are surrounded by cherry blossom trees, which are beautiful during spring. One of the domes even floats on water, creating an elegant atmosphere. A large natural hot spring bath is available, and you can gaze out into the lush surrounding forest. For dinner, you can enjoy a variety of dishes, with seafood at the forefront.
6. Dot Glamping Ako
For a casual ocean glamping experience, Dot Glamping Ako might be the place for you. Looking out into the Seto Inland Sea, you’ll feel instantly relaxed.
The outdoor bath and cold bath are shared, but the saunas on site are private and require a reservation (free of charge!). After a long day, you can enjoy a meal prepared by the staff that features foods like Japanese wagyu beef, but a grill can also be provided for those bringing their own food.
7. Tent-Umi Shibukawa Sea Picnic
For ocean views and quick access to the beach, stay at Tent-Umi Shibukawa Sea Picnic. Eight tents are equipped with AC, a grill area, and proper bedding. Note that the shower room/toilet is separate from the tents. A sauna is available for paid reservation.
Enjoy delicious seafood, Japanese Black beef dinner, and a picnic-like breakfast on the beach the next morning. Nearby, you can visit the Shibukawa Marine Aquarium or go sea kayaking.
8. The Village Yufuin Onsen Glamping
You can enjoy the onsen (hot spring) culture in Yufuin while also staying a night at The Village Yufuin Onsen Glamping. Most of the dome-type tents include a private hot spring. For tents without private hot springs, you can reserve the hot spring in the resort's clubhouse.
For dinner, enjoy a hearty ribeye steak meal; for breakfast, a hot sandwich set awaits.
9. Glamping Spa Waita
Opened in January 2024, Glamping Spa Waita seeks to be sustainably conscious, and all accommodations and the main building are made from recycled containers. With many geothermal sources nearby, the facilities aim to generate electricity through steam.
All rooms have a semi open-air bath, a sauna, a cold water bath, and a shower room. You can enjoy Kumamoto Prefecture’s signature Akagyu beef alongside delicious seafood and paella for dinner. For breakfast, you can enjoy various steamed foods, which is the specialty of Glamping Spa Waita.
10. Koshikano Onsen
Don’t be fooled by the name, as Koshikano Onsen has several glamping options during your stay. The three accommodation choices include suite, standard, and hot spring ryokan glamping. The hot spring ryokan glamping is the most unique of the three; it combines elements from ryokans and glamping, offering bonfire spaces, outdoor baths, and tent saunas.
Several delicious meal options are available based on the type of glamping choice you’ve made, all featuring local specialties like Kagoshima Kurobuta pork.
11. GlamTech Resorts Heaven
GlamTech Resorts Heaven is based in Miyakojima City, meaning close access to crystal blue waters and immersion in an island-life atmosphere. There are 30 domes available, which can be chosen based on the group size and whether or not you’d prefer to have a private jet bath. For food, you could purchase a meal from the on-site food truck, which serves foods like garlic shrimp and omelet-topped fried rice. While there is a pool and dog park available, you can also book a partner tour for activities such as snorkeling or kayaking.
