As the country's political and economic center, it's often the starting point for many travelers on their trip to Japan.

In contrast, Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands, is famed for its vast natural landscapes, thrilling ski slopes, and volcanic hot springs. Its capital, Sapporo, is known for its ski resorts, exquisite beer, and the annual Sapporo Snow Festival, featuring remarkable ice sculptures every winter.

•    It’s advisable to purchase the JR Pass in advance outside Japan as it may be cheaper compared to buying it within the country.
•    You can buy a JR pass from authorized travel agents around the world, or online here.
•    The JR Pass covers many Shinkansen lines, some local JR buses, the Tokyo Monorail to/from Haneda Airport, and the JR Ferry to Miyajima Island in Hiroshima.
•    The JR Pass is a fantastic value if you plan to travel across different regions of Japan, as individual Shinkansen tickets can be quite expensive.

•    Part of the fun of riding the shinkansen is the special bento boxes that are sold at major shinkansen stations. These can be enjoyed during your transit.
