About the airport
With direct flights to major cities and eight outlying islands, as well as Shanghai, Seoul, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, Kagoshima Airport is the second busiest airport in Kyushu after Fukuoka Airport and the southernmost gateway to the mainland by air. The observation deck of the airport offers a spectacular view of the Kirishima mountains in the east and Sakurajima in the south. The airport also boasts natural hot spring foot baths, which is a popular attraction. Besides a parking lot that has space for about 1,300 vehicles, the airport hosts many souvenir stores and gourmet restaurants.
Sightseeing and activities
The Kirishima area, which is home to Kagoshima Airport, is renowned for being one of the best hot spring areas in Kyushu. About 30 minutes north on Route 223 is the hot spring locale of Kirishima Onsenkyo, where the popular town of Maruo Onsen and the oldest rock bath in Kirishima are located. Several renowned hot spring resorts are along the way, including Shiohitashi Onsen by Ryoma Park. Renting a car allows you to visit several of them in just one day. The road is mountainous but straight in many places, so it is a pleasant drive. Kirishima Jingu Shrine, a designated national treasure and spiritually charged location, is roughly 40 minutes away from the airport and 15 minutes from Kirishima Onsenkyo. Furthermore, Kareigawa Station, a registered tangible cultural property popular for its wooden architecture, is only about 10 minutes away by car on Prefectural Route 56.
Transit and transportation
Kagoshima Airport is not directly connected to a rail line, so cars and buses are the most common modes of transportation. Although airport buses are available to each city center, renting a car is by far the best way to sightsee. The Mizobe-Kagoshimakuko interchange provides easy access to various destinations, with central Kagoshima City being about 40 minutes away. Car rental services are not located near the airport, so take advantage of the free shuttle service.
